Maries County might only have a population just over 9,000, but we're a community that cares!

Constitutional Rights

We support the constitutional rights of all citizens and believe that they should apply equally. As such, we believe that we are greater as a nation together than we are on our own – that this country and all its citizens succeed when everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same rules.

Protection for Citizens

We believe in helping those who need it and protecting those who can’t protect themselves. Policies on the local, state, and national levels cannot throw our most vulnerable citizens under the bus and we fight to ensure that all people are treated fairly and with respect.

Fair Pay

We believe in the rights of workers to unionize and collectively bargain so that they receive fair compensation for their work and in turn, our economy thrives for everyone. We believe in equal pay for equal work.

Government by the People

We believe that regular people should be the voice that our government listens to, not corporations or monied interest. This also means that we believe citizens have a duty to be well informed and to vote in every election – this is how we make our voices heard.

Our Candidates

Remember to donate to their campaign!

Claire McCaskill - U.S. Senate

Claire McCaskill is a Democratic member of the U.S. Senate from Missouri. McCaskill is running in the general election on November 6, 2018, after advancing from the primary on August 7, 2018.

McCaskill began her political career in the Missouri House of Representatives from 1982 to 1988. She became the Missouri Auditor in 1999 and held the post until being elected to her U.S. Senate seat.

McCaskill is a born and raised native of Missouri. She attended the University of Missouri where she earned a B.A. in political science in 1975 and a J.D. in 1978. She was the first active member of the Missouri House of Representatives to give birth, and in 2006, she became the first female senator to represent the state of Missouri.

Nicole Galloway - Missouri State Auditor

Prior to taking office as State Auditor, Nicole served as Boone County Treasurer for four years. As Treasurer, Nicole managed a $100 million investment portfolio and nearly $200 million in annual revenues. She protected the county’s leading bond rating and put its financial strength to use to save taxpayers more than $4.6 million. But Nicole never expected to run for office. In the private sector, she audited some of the world’s largest companies, shining a light on their inner workings of Fortune 500 firms to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability while at Shelter Insurance in Columbia and Brown Smith Wallace in Creve Coeur.

Nicole received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Missouri and degrees in Applied Mathematics and Economics from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. She lives in Columbia with her husband, Jon, and sons, William, Benjamin, and Joseph.

Katy Geppert - U.S. Congressional Candidate MO-03

Katy is running for US Congress in the 3rd Congressional District because she sees opportunity for positive change in this district and this country and wants to be a part of that positive change. Katy grew up in a middle-class, union home in the St. Louis suburb of Collinsville, IL. Her parents were able to earn enough to provide her and her siblings with happy, stable childhoods. This stability allowed Katy to attend an above-average public school and earn a scholarship to Quincy University. There, she took on the leadership role of Resident Assistant and joined Alpha Omicron Pi (AOII) sorority. These opportunities taught her the importance of leadership and service to the community. Since graduating with a B.S. in chemistry, Katy has worked in the industry for companies big and small in the St. Louis region. While working full time, she earned a Master’s in chemistry from SLU and became Six Sigma Certified in process improvement and Root Cause Failure Analysis. Overall, she has been working as a scientist for 14+ years where it has been her job to LITERALLY troubleshoot and solve problems, big and small, every day. Katy has the skills to create positive, effective change and she plans on doing so in Washington. She currently lives in the St. Louis region with her husband and two daughters and volunteers with AOII as a mentor to young women.

Nicole Thompson - Missouri State Senate District 6

Nicole Thompson has a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health from the University of Central Missouri and an MBA from Western Governors University. She worked for the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations for 9 years first as an OSHA Consultant and then as a Program Manager in the Division of Workers’ Compensation. She now owns and operates her own consulting company helping businesses effectively manage their safety and health programs and training. Nicole is running for state senate because she wants to see a more Open, Honest, and Responsive Government in Missouri.

Ashley Fajkowski - Missouri House District 62

Ashley is running to represent Missouri's 62nd House District. She lives in Northwye with her husband and young son, where they work to move towards a more sustainable lifestyle. As a child, Ashley spent a lot of time on her grandfather's cattle farm while her mother worked and went to school. She grew up valuing the hard work she saw her family members put in, and also that the opportunities they had were a lot different based on the education they received. Deaths in the family resulted in her leaving college to move home, twice. After getting married and becoming a parent, Ashley stayed home to raise and teach her son. She enjoys being in the garden, the woods, or on a river. Ashley is a RiverRat Democrat, and proud of it.

Jayne Helton Williams - Maries County Collector

My name is Jayne Helton Williams and I have served as the Maries County Collector since 1999. I am seeking re-election during the August 7, 2018, primary election. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the taxpayers of Maries County and am looking forward to serving in the future.

Born and raised on a farm along the little Maries river in the western part of Maries County, I have made Maries county my home my entire life. Being raised on a farm, I recognize and appreciate hard working, dedicated and sincere people. I come from a family that has lived in and served the Maries County community for many years. My husband and I own a small farm in the Eastern part of Maries County and continue the legacy of hard work and appreciation of living in a rural community and having
respect for our friends and neighbors.

Having served as the Maries County Collector for almost five terms, I have the experience to deal with the taxpayers of Maries county in a professional and friendly manner. My checks and balancing are in place on a daily, monthly and yearly basis. I have been through four full-scope audits with the state auditor’s office and have had clean results on all four.

Mark Buschmamn - Maries County Circuit Clerk & Recorder

My name is Mark Buschmamn. I have served as Maries County Circuit Clerk & Recorder since 2007. I am seeking re-election in August of 2018. I have enjoyed serving the people of Maries County for past almost 12 years and look forward to working for the citizens in the years to come. Being raised on a farm in western Maries County along the Big Maries Creek and working on that farm my whole life. Now running my own farm that in 2019 will be in the family name for 150 years. Maries County is a great place to live and raise a family. We have so many family and friends here and it's where we want to stay. Thank you all for all your support for the last 12 years and look forward to working for Maries County for years to come.

Rhonda Slone - Maries County Treasurer

My name is Rhonda (Rowden) Slone, and I am your Maries County Treasurer. I took office in 1999 and have been serving the citizens of Maries County for almost 20 years. Born and raised in Maries County, I am proud of our rural county. I am a wife, mother of two children and grandmother of two wonderful grandchildren. I am an active member of the First Baptist Church in Vienna.

It has been my goal to provide accurate, up to date account accuracy at all times. It has also been my goal to see that all schools, ambulance districts, water districts, the library and of course roads, receive their monies in a timely manner. I strive to work with all public entities and elected officials to see that our county tax dollars are handled efficiently.

It has been a pleasure to work as your County Treasurer and I hope that I can continue to serve the citizens of Maries County in this role. Thank you for your support.

Sonny Helton - Presiding Commissioner

My name is Vernon Helton but most people know me as Sonny. I am running for the office of Presiding Commissioner because I believe that our county would greatly benefit from increasing economic opportunities by strengthening and attracting new businesses (and jobs) to our community and that doing so will help us keep our youth from having to leave to pursue a good living.

I am a native Maries county resident and live on a small ranch in Brinktown with my wife Robin, where we raised our family and now raise cattle and grow hay. My qualifications include experience as a small business owner in the HVAC industry for 35 years. I understand the importance of fostering a favorable climate for attracting and retaining businesses in our community. Operating my own business taught me a lot about the necessity of efficiency and effectiveness in managing resources to succeed in a competitive environment, and I feel that will translate directly to what is needed in the office of presiding commissioner. My current employment with the Maries R-1 school district where I have been for 25 years has given me first hand, daily experience working with and around our young adults. The importance of good-paying employment opportunities in keeping our youth in our communities instead of having to flee to larger cities upon graduation cannot be overstated. A good working government is imperative to foster the development of local economic opportunity. As your Presiding Commissioner, I will fight for Maries county to attract businesses, grants, and additional growth opportunities such as those recommended by the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC). I believe that with the proper utilization of all available avenues we can make this county thrive like never before. I would appreciate your vote for me, Sonny Helton on November 6th for a brighter future for Maries County.
